Here’s the latest:
Subscription changes: In an effort to build readership, I made current content available to free subscribers, paid subscribers, and nonsubscribers. This means that you can freely share any post to the world. (Content older than 4 weeks will be available to subscribers only.)
Free trial subscription: If you’re a free subscriber and you want to access paid content—but you can’t spare the $5—you can use the Free Trial Subscription option. Just open any post that’s behind the paywall and you’ll see the Start Trial button. (I set the paid subscription to this Substack at $5/month because that’s as low as Substack will let anyone go.)
Chat is live. Chat is a, well, chat feature that’s restricted to subscribers of a Substack. If you post something to Chat in My Favorite Suspects, then only your fellow readers can see it. I moderate the Chat. I’m not sure what to do with it yet. I want to focus on writing content and I think we all get spammed a lot on social media from other sources. (You won’t get an email about Chats.)
Notes are live. If you’re a Substack member, you have access to Notes (which is kind of like Reddit and Twitter). I’ll be occasionally sharing content to Notes, but I’m trying to focus on writing. (You won’t get an email about Notes.)
New domain name for this Substack! Now you’ll find My Favorite Suspects under myfavoritesuspects.com. You may have noticed a change in the site’s URL if you notice those things.
I launched a new Substack, “Security Explained,” which is now live. This Substack is nonfiction and has the goal of explaining issues in security and privacy to a more general audience. I’ve invited some guest writers who are experts in different aspects of security so I don’t plan to do all the writing for this one. The first series for Security Explained is on the security of medical devices, which ties in with the Kindle and paperback launch of my book, Security Issues of Personal Medical Devices.
